Common Questions About Medicare

Enrolling in Medicare at Age 65

When becoming eligible for Medicare, you have a 7 month Initial Enrollment Period (commonly referred to as IEP) that includes 3 months before you turn 65, the month of your birthday and three months after you turn 65. If you are already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits you will automatically be enrolled.  If you are not automatically enrolled due to either of those factors listed prior, feel free contact us and we can help you get enrolled through Medicare.gov

Enrolling in Part A (Hospitalization) and Part B (Medical)

As discussed prior, if you are already receiving Social Security benefits or Railroad Retirement benefits, you will automatically be enrolled. If you are not, you will need to enroll in Part A and Part B yourself. We can certainly assist you with this if you prefer the help during a scheduled sit down meeting.

Coverage begins on the first day of the month of your birthday.

Differences between Plan F and Plan G

Plan F pays for 100% of all Medicare approved expenses, including your part B deductible, which in 2018 is $183. With Plan G, you are responsible for the Part B deductible.  After you meet that deductible, 100% of Medicare approved expenses will be covered fully for the remainder of the calendar year.

Enrolling in Medicare When Working Beyond 65

If you plan to continue working past the age of 65 or are covered under your spouses group plan, discuss whether or not you are required to enroll in Medicare.  If you are not required to immediately enroll, you can delay enrollment and sign up later without a penalty.

In many cases, if your spouses employer employs less than 20 people, you will be required to enroll in Medicare.

Watch Out for Medicare Scams

Be extremely cautious of potential scam artists who call on the phone posing as a representative of Medicare and ask for your Medicare Number. Medicare DOES NOT call beneficiaries on the phone. If you encounter a scam, report it immediately to Medicare.
